Each year travelers are drawn to Jerusalem based on their interest in or devotion to a book that for centuries has been considered holy, the Bible. In that thousands of years old city, these travelers will also find the only museum on the planet that’s dedicated to Biblical history and that of the Ancient Near East. The Bible Lands Museum is largely the work of its founder, Dr. Elie Borowski, a man who over fifty years assembled art work that draws from the earliest civilizations in the area to the Early Christian era in the lands of the Bible.
The collections are displayed chronologically, allowing visitors to literally walk through history, tracing the development of religious belief, of worship, then trade, commerce and communication. It also tracks the beginning of cities up through the Talmudic period.
In over twenty galleries, visitors will find artifacts representing events and civilizations found in the Bible, revealing the various traditions, rituals and cultures through ancient mosaics, jewelry, seals, stone and terra cotta sculptures. Examples of ancient cultures of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon and Sumer are presented. Thousands of pieces will reveal the world of the Phoenicians, the Hittites, and the Greek and Roman civilizations, as well as Canaan, Judea and Israel. The artifacts in the museum reveal the history of the early world, from its urban beginnings in the 4th millenium B.C.E. in Mesopotamia to Roman and Coptic Egypt.
After checking into Jerusalem hotels , any visitor to this astonishing city may orient him or herself through the thousands of years of antiquity by taking a walk first through these galleries, and gaining a perspective on one of humanity’s fascinating spiritual journeys.
